“Why don’t you work abroad?”

Yesterday a Filipino, who is my on-line English teacher said to me “Why don’t you work abroad? ” I couldn’t say anything and not because I can’t speak English.I have never talked seriously with my friends about working abroad.

I think that it is difficult for most Japanese to work abroad because of the three reasons as bellow.

First, Japanese companies are based on lifetime employment and the seniority system.
It is very difficult to change a jobs. Most companie, sexcept major companies, are located only in Japan .

Second, if you build your own house to get a mortgage, you can’t move anywhere until the mortgage is returned.
Japanese usually apply for mortgage for thirty five or thirty years.
Your house can’t sell for as much as you bought it.

Third, if you have any children, most Japanese think that caring for their children abroad is immposible for them because
of language, food, culture and other reasons.

On the other hand the Filipino said that her friends are working in US, Europe and other countries.
I wonder that if the three reasons could be solved, if more Japanese would work abroad.

Anyway it is employment ice age now.Young Japanese may have to go abroad whether they like or not.
I wish to go if I have an oppotunity to work or live abroad,

On-line English lessons

I enrolled into on-line English lessons since three days ago.
This experience of on-line English lessons is the first time for me.

First I installed skype on my PC and tested it with a low voice of mine.
But when the first lesson began, an English teacher couldn’t hear my voice well even though I could hear the teacher’s voice.
After I set up the skype again, I chose a basic text among a basic, standard, news, conversation and pronunciation text.
The basic text is written for English beginners.
For example “What’s your name?” “What are you interested in ? ”
The contents were easy to read but I couldn’t speak fluently or hear what the teacher said.
So I said “ Pardon” many times. I felt depressed a little.

But I think that I will be able to speak well six months later if I speak everyday.I can’t wait to speak well.

Anyway these lessons are convenient and has a good program to study English speaking.
I heard that this young Japanese man established this company three months in Philippines.
That’s amazing.

My English study

I have studied English from junior high school to high school for six years. The main reason that I studied English was for the purpose of taking the university entrance exam. So I learnt many difficult phrases and long sentences like what the other Japanese did.But I forgot almost all of them. Studying English in Japan is impractical.
Then I saw a need to study English again two months ago. I began to study English for the first time in fifteen years. My own program to studying English is as below.

I read the books written for children or English students. For example Penguin Readers or Roald Dahl’s books. But recentry I have been reading various blogs since I don’t have much time.

As you can see, I write a post on this blog everyday. And I use lang-8, a community which helps people to learn foreign languages from each other. If you were to kindly comment something, it would imply that you could understand my diary.

I am listening to three podcasts while riding on the train to work.
1 Voa : American national news for English students
2 English as a second language : I cas listen to various conversations.
3 CNN student news : I can’t listen to even half of the content because it is spoken so fast.
But I can understand the contents through the video.

This is the most difficult part to learn. Because I have never talked with an English speaker and they don’t live around my house. But I will try the on-line English lessons the day after tomorrow. It takes 300 Japanese yen per 25 minutes which is one-tenth the cost to go to a normal commute English school. I am nervous in a sense but am looking forward to receiving the lessons. If I were able to speak English fluently, I wish to interact with many friends all over the world.

I have a dream.
