My youngest daughter, who is five years old, started to practice using chopsticks at home and a day care
It’s important to use it correctly for Japanese

There is a tool to learn about a way of using chopsticks

This is a special tool both for a right-handed person and left-handed person

I hope that she’ll use it correctly because I can’t use it well unfortunately

  1. I used to notice (but never commented) that my Japanese friend didn’t really use chopsticks well. She holds them in a strange way, and so does her daughter. Now you say you don’t use them well! I am so surprised, I thought every Japanese was born knowing how. But now I see your daughter practicing. I am sure she will be a champion!

    • Yes, there are many Japanese who can’t use a chopsticks well
If parents or school don’t teach children it correctly, children can’t learn it
It’s important to practice it when people are children

  2. Since moving to Korea, I’ve learned to use chopsticks. Apparently I hold them differently than most people here, but it works for me, so oh well. We bought a pair of those kid chopsticks a while ago, but we still don’t have any children to use them yet. :)

      • Plastic chopsticks are common in Japan. We use steel one only when we eat Korean food.
Disposable wooden chopsticks are also common when you eat bento 弁当 However, I like traditional wood chopsticks :)

  5. It’s maybe a funny story how I learned to use chopsticks very well.
When I went away to college, many former high school classmates of mine went to a neighboring college. Sometimes we would go together to a Chinese restaurant. They said (all young men) I could eat as much as I wanted, if I were still hungry they would even order another dish for me — but I had to eat everything with chopsticks.
    I learned. Quickly.

  6. Such cute chopsticks and looks like a good way to learn. I had a set of cool red chopsticks when I was a kid, but I didn’t have techniques like this to learn to use them. I just jumped right in. It was so long ago, I don’t remember if it was difficult or not.

  7. I had tried using chopsticks while my stay in Japan. But it is very difficult and after a few attempts left it at that. Now I have kept a few of them as souvenirs :) I am sure daughter is going to do a great job with them :)

  8. Cool! I can never get the proper way how to use it. I’m very aware of how to but just could not get it. I saw the tutorial on the Special Feature of Kung Fu Panda.
