This paper toy is also our traditional culture from the past.

You can beat the paper box, which is dohyo 土俵, with your finger. The toy is very simple and rare nowadays.

It’s interesting because there are many kinds of wrestler, such as animals and characters.

This is the video which my daughters were playing it.

We say, “はっきょいのこった”(Hakkyoinokotta) when wrestlers begin to fight.

  1. cocominoさん おはようございます。
    お嬢さんの「はっけよいのこった!」の可愛い声にはげまされて、
    私も今日1日を元気に始めようと思います。 なごみます。

  2. So much time is spent playing games on computers, phones and tabs nowdays it is great to see kids reverting to traditional games. Reminds me of Tiddlywinks and Pickupsticks – non-electronic games of my youth!

  3. I’ve seen this game in one of the Takeshi Kitano’s movie! *^o^*
I thought it wasn’t a real game but something he invented for the sake of the film. There was even a scene at the beach, where two people imitated the paper figures and the other two were beating the sand with their hands. It was a funny sight! *^v^*

  4. I have always been fascinated with Sumo Wrestling! As someone who always has to watch my weight, I love seeing the big bodies of the Sumos wrestlers :-) The paper game looks interesting too.

  5. very traditional, Japan likes to have the focus on tradition – I’ve read, that muslim persons get no permission to settle in Japan – is that a correct information? compare with Amsterdam – nearly open to everyone, what do you think about this different kind of politics?

  6. This is my first time seeing a sumo wrestling paper toy! The video showing us how to play it is very cute – so are your little ones! :D It looks like a lot of fun too! It looks like something we would enjoy playing! Very nice post and greetings to all at home! Sharon
