Kawagoe Festival

IMG_2670

I visited the Kawagoe Festival with my daughters who wanted to go last weekends when I came back from abroad.

This year, all 29 floats were running around in the town because this year was 90th anniversary of the municipality of Kawagoe.

Even if I visit this festival every year, I thought that the festival was very impressive. I guess that foreign people are interested in the festival a lot.

The fox is my daughters’ favorite during the festival.

There is also a lion.

I have never seen such black mask.

Tease pumpkins are decorated for the festival.

The dog was also enjoying the festival. We could hardly move in the crowd.

The sunset of that day was special.

The float at night was also beautiful, wasn’t it?
The festival continued for all two days.

  2. The floats are beautiful like moving art museums. The fox, your daughter’s favorite, looks a little scary to me. Local people’s enthusiasm must be a driving force to this fabulous time-honored festival. Those pumpkins are as charming as the Halloween pumpkins. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Must have been really nice to spend a day at the festival with your daughters! Especially because you were in Europe for quite a while so they must have missed you a lot!!
Anyway, the dog that’s also enjoying the festival is really cute… I wish I had such dog as well :D

  4. Dear Masa! How lovely to see this colourful, fascinating and happy festival in your area! What a great tradition. You must be so happy to be able to take your family out again! Thank you for the wonderful pictures! Sharon

  5. Your daughter’s fox is my favourite too!

I originally planned to go to the festival this year, but just didn’t have the time. So I’m very glad I could enjoy it in this post! I must admit, I’m also grateful I didn’t have to experience those crowds! Phew!

  6. Such big floats, they must be heavy, just like the dog being carried by its owner. Your pumpkins are lighter in color than those in the U.S. Does Japan celebrate Halloween?

    • The floats are very big, indeed.
I think that those pumpkin aren’t common. The color is darker.
We like Halloween although it’s not common to cerebrate it in Japan.

  7. i love Kawagoe Festival! i was there last year and reading your post about this year’s celebration reminds how happy i was seeing the giant floats and the costumes :)

  8. So many colors out here and the enthusiasm can be sensed by your beautiful pictures! Loved the fox, the pumpkin faces and the floats at night… I would so love to attend this one some day :) Thanks for sharing :)

  9. A very historic festival indeed — and so interesting to look at all the figures, the costumes. I too especially like the fox —
(Do you think it is really a beautiful lady? I guess it’s more usual in stories that a fox can appear as a beautiful lady, but is still really a fox!)

    • Thanks. I remembered the old tale which a lady became a fox although I forgot the detail.
Maybe so because there are some old tales not only in Japan but also the other countries.

  10. I am coming back to Japan for my 6th visit next year, and plan to stay near Urawa. Now I have discovered your bob, I might need to fit Kawagoe into the itinerary!

  11. I’ve attended the Kawagoe festival in 2008. It was quite spectacular and I enjoyed it very much. I also really love the typical festival food. :)
