Dutch Food

I visited some Dutch restaurants recently. Basically, the dishes are simple and the quantity is large compared to Japanese dishes. I can’t eat all of the dish most of the time. Chicken, beef and sausages are main dishes. The side dishes are fried potatoes, cabbages, eggs and some vegetables with mayonnaise and ketchup.

As for Japanese, it’s necessary to eat rice but they sometimes eat it for risotto.

It’s interesting to know the difference between their food and our food. I wondered if we would become tall if we eat this quantity of food like this.

  1. I may have Dutch blood, but I can seldom finish a restaurant meal in Europe and especially the USA. It’s just too much. Maybe that’s why I’m not tall? :)

What about Dutch cookies and sweet stuff? You tried that yet?

    Jenever? ;)

  2. Nice comparison. I always liked the smaller quantity of food I got in Japan. it was usually just right for me. If you have ever been to the United States, you will often see large portions of food served in restaurants. It is often way too much for me since I’m not a big eater. Even the appetizers can be large enough for a full meal.
I seek out restaurants with small dishes and smaller servings.

  3. “I wondered if we would become tall if we eat this quantity of food like this.” Hahaha! This is so funny Cocomino. Well, I don’t know about getting taller but I certainly know you would get fatter :P
Enjoy your time out there. Did it start to get cold and rainy? Over here it’s been pouring the whole day, still the air is warm.

    • Oh, I’m worried about getting fatter.
Here in Holland, it often gets cold and rainiy. I heard that it’s common in Holland. However, the room inside is quite warm.

  4. Those portions are huge and the food looks very greasy. As others have said: it wouldn’t make you tall but it could cause problems health-wise if you ate that sort of diet all the time!

  5. The Dutch are often very tall, and probably need a lot of heavy food. As someone said, also the climate, certainly in winter. I am a small American, and older, and so I don’t need nearly as much food as restaurants here serve. Japanese food is much more to my taste also!
It’s also more beautiful to my eyes, and more beautifully arranged. But I think in a former life I was Japanese, so that might explain my strong preferences. ;-)
One thing you will be happy to return to, then, is Japanese cuisine!!!!
Meanwhile I am getting hungry — maybe tomorrow I will make niku jaga?

  6. It is funny… I usually don’t get very hungry or eat much at all until much later on in the day / in the late afternoon… which probably isn’t very healthy, because I probably eat too much then. Both styles of food look very good to me! :)

  7. 海外におられると 食事は洋食中心なのでしょうね。 長く滞在されると、奥様が作って下さる シンプルな和食がとても恋しくなる事でしょう。 お気持ち解ります! (^▽^;)
    日本は今、秋まっさかりです。
