Alvar Aalto’s House
Finally, I was able to visit Alvar Aalto’s house the other day.
Of course, almost all architectural students in Japan know about him, but there seem to be a few who come to see his works.
Actually when I was a student, I wasn’t really interested in famous architecture. That’s why we only knew about masterworks through publications.
However, when I visited his home, I felt really comfortable and impressed.
He thought about daylighting, the landscape, and the way of using each of the rooms and furniture.
All combinations were perfect.
This is a semi private room.
This is a his space for waork,
This is his hobby.
This is his office. He employes some staff from 20 to 10.
This is his study room.
This is his and his family’s dinning.
He is regarded as the father of modern architecture in Finland.

I am a big fan of Alvar Aalto and his house looks exactly as I would have expected (which makes me happy!)
Thank you. I’m glad that you also like the house. It’s a great work, isn’t it?
I like all the big windows so the natural light can stream in and the modernness of the interior. It must be special to visit an architect’s design you studied in school.
Many thanks. The light is very important to plan good rooms, you know.
Fortunately, I visited the house and saw it well.
Now, THIS is a house I could fit into quite well–and actually enjoy cleaning!
I think so.Thank you!
I like the big windows. My favorite room is the library. I would like that room very much
Thanks. The library is so cozy that you can stay here all day long.
I like Alvar Aalto design and architecture, so this was an interesting post. I didn’t know you could visit his house. Now I have, trough your photos, they were very good for telling this story. I especially like the last, from the living room. Very nice, Cocomino. I think scandinavian and japanese architecture is a little bit related?
Thank you so much. The last one is also my favorite.
I’m not sure the relationship but maybe so because we use many wood and many Japanese like Alvar Aalto’s design.
Looks like a nice place! Very cozy.
Thank you! It was really cozy.
That must have been special to visit someone you have studied about in school! His house is very neat and tastefully done, just speaks of his brilliance! His hobby is very interesting too! Thanks for sharing
Thank you so much. I’m happy that you also enjoyed it. It was quite neat.
Very interesting! I searched for him to see a few more examples of his work, and a photo came up where he appears to be sitting / working in the space you’ve shared in your third photo (only the chair is on the other side of the table – his back is to the windows)…
Thanks. I thought that he was still living at his home and watching us.
It was very warm atmosphere. Glad to know that you like it.
What a great place! From the outside, it looks as if there aren’t many windows but from the inside there is lots of light. My favourite room is the dining room.
That’s right. It’s a great plan. I also like the dining room. The green is so beautiful.
Have you visited Academic bookstore (Akateeminen kirjakauppa) in Helsinki? The house it’s in was designed by Alvar Aalto. It’s were Stockmann is, on Keskuskatu 1, Pohjoisesplanadi 39. Seems you can find his designs everywhere in Finland
I once saw there a Moomin book in Japanese
They sell many beautiful books about Finland.
Thanks! I visited the bookstore last week and yesterday. It’s also good and I found some Japanese books.
I took photos there. So I may share them someday.
If I have enough time, I’ll join the tour of Finlandia hall in Helsinki.
I love the light and the space and the garden outside! ^^
Thank you. It’s a cozy space, indeed.
The House has great natural light.
Yes, thanks much. It’s a nice plan and I enjoyed a lot.
How interesting I must admit to not having heard of this architect before.
Thanks a lot. Glad to hear that. It was very interesting.
Wonderful architecture!
Many thanks!
This was a totally fascinating post. I admire his work, and Finnish design in general very very much. (The sheets in our bedroom are Marimekko.)
But I never would have expected I could see Alto’s house — so thank you!
Thank you. There are many Marimekko shops and I found that there are many Japanese in the shop.
I love the clean lines of the home… no wasted space too.
Thanks a lot. I think so.
never saw the INTERIOR before
- thank you for sharing!
because you just visited in Finland Aalto architecture:
if we meet: nearby is an Aalto theatre!

That’s an great idea. I hope so. The architecture sounds interesting.
My pleasure!
I love the lobby design. Lobby with high ceiling makes one more comfortable. ^^
That’s true. High ceiling is good for relax.
