Independent Reasearch
In the Summer holidays, there is always homework for elementary school students.
It includes section on independent research. Children can research whatever they like. There are also reference books in book stores and libraries.
My eldest daughter chose to research about tops. She wanted to know which kinds of tops could spin for a long time.
Firstly, she and her parents made round, triangle and square tops.
We checked how long each of them could spin.
As a result of the test, we found that a round spinning top was the best at spinning for a long time.
Then we also made spinning tops of various hights and tried the same thing.
We found that a medium length from 3 cm to 10 cm was best.
We compared thandmade tops one and the usual tops.
Finally, we wrote the things that should be changed about tops to improve them.
It was her homework but it became my family’s homework.
Looks like a lot of work but does sound fun at the same time. I think some independent research and study is a good thing

Fun research! And school projects often become family projects – the parents have to be careful not to do too much, though!
