Summer Trip 07 : Making Chopsticks
I wrote about making chopsticks with bamboo the other day.
Aside from that we also made chopsticks with Japanese cypress in Nagano prefecture.
This time, we planed the wood very sharply.
It wasn’t dangerous compared to using a knife for kids.
Since the plane was made for making chopsticks, it was very easy to make them beautiful even for my kids.
The staff said that you can use the trash after shaving the wood
for reducing bad smell. It’s also a souvenir.
The cypress has a very good smell.
We sand away them after planing.
After finishing them, we had to put oil on them to prevent molds from foming.
It’s interesting to compare bamboo chopsticks and cypress chopsticks.
The upper one is bamboo and the down one is cypress.
The smell is different but both of them have own memory.
PS: This post is the last one of the summer trip. Thank you for reading all of them.

I was fascinated to see the pictures of your children making chopsticks.
Thank you so much. Glad to hear that. Have a great weekend.
This is so interesting! My daughter would be keenly interested to see how it’s done, so I’ll be forwarding this post to her as soon I click “post comment”
Have a greet weekend, Coco!
Thank you so much. I’m really happy to hear that. I hope that this post will be useful for you.
what an amazing experience! and it looks like fun!!
Indeed, thank you.
Fantastic!
Thanks for sharing your summer trip with us
My pleasure. It’s nice to share it.
I think I prefer this method for making chopsticks – I’d certainly like to give it a go. I imagine those wood shavings smell wonderful which makes me wonder if the chopsticks have an after-taste as the wood is so fragrant.
I can also imagine so. The smell was so good and refreshing.
Thank you for your comment.
I like your photo of the wood shavings. It looks like ribbons. I think it would be a lot of fun to make chopsticks. Your blog is very interesting
Thanks a lot. That’s encouraging. I think so. We really enjoyed the trip.
Impressive work, Cocomino. It is wonderful that old traditions are preserved, that some people know and do…
Many thanks. It’s a great way to learn about old traditions. Have a great weekends.
I would love to make my own chopsticks and then eat a delicious meal with them. Which do you prefer bamboo or cypress?
Both chopsticks smell good but I prefer cypress because it’s more thin than the bamboo one.
I love cypress tree. I bought a little bottle of cypress essential oil.
It has a very happy scent. I love it. The third photo looks like macaroni.
The oil is also good. It sounds to make you fresh.
やはり木製の箸のほうがいいですね。
うちの箸は韓国の金属製なのです〜
韓国料理屋に行くと、確かに重い箸がでますね。箸の使い方が上手くなりそうです。
they often tried to teach me how to eat with those sticks – but I never learned … I need a spoon or at least a fork …
I see. Certainly, it’s not easy to use sticks even for me.
Your summer trip was both fun and educational! Thank you for sharing them all with us.
My pleasure. Glad to hear that. Happy holidays.
Lovely chopsticks! I was forced to use a fork when I ate leftover sushi the other day – there was something just wrong about that, I missed the chopsticks.
Great summer series, Cocomino!
I have never heard that using a fork for sushi. It’s okay if you enjoy it.
I was fascinated by the pictures. I’d never stopped to consider how chopsticks are made!
Thank you. It was very interesting experience for us because we didn’t know that.
Fascinating to learn how to make chopsticks! Thanks for sharing your summer experiences.
My pleasure and thanks for supporting my posts.
Those are really beautiful chopsticks (the cypresses) and I can imagine how good the smell is. I hope you each have a pair that you can use every day for the memories –
I also really like your teeshirt with the Micky silhouette!
Thanks. The smell is really good. We use it carefully.
My wife (not I) wears the Micky Mouse.
TY for sharing your skills and traditions with us.
My pleasure. It’s nice to share them.
Interesting! The Cypress chopsticks look like the ones they give you in restaurants. Are they the same?
Thanks. I think that restaurants one is made by machine but this one is handmade.
We love to use chopsticks to eat with at times but I have never thought about making them ourselves. So interesting. Thanks, will share this with my kids.
I see. Thanks for sharing it to your kids. We really enjoyed making chopsticks because we didn’t know that although we use it every day.
That is so cool! I’ve never seen how chopsticks are made (love the wood shavings!)
