Summer Trip 07 : Making Chopsticks

I wrote about making chopsticks with bamboo the other day.
Aside from that we also made chopsticks with Japanese cypress in Nagano prefecture.

This time, we planed the wood very sharply.
It wasn’t dangerous compared to using a knife for kids.

Since the plane was made for making chopsticks, it was very easy to make them beautiful even for my kids.

The staff said that you can use the trash after shaving the wood
for reducing bad smell. It’s also a souvenir.
The cypress has a very good smell.

We sand away them after planing.

After finishing them, we had to put oil on them to prevent molds from foming.

It’s interesting to compare bamboo chopsticks and cypress chopsticks.
The upper one is bamboo and the down one is cypress.
The smell is different but both of them have own memory.

PS: This post is the last one of the summer trip. Thank you for reading all of them.

  1. I think I prefer this method for making chopsticks – I’d certainly like to give it a go. I imagine those wood shavings smell wonderful which makes me wonder if the chopsticks have an after-taste as the wood is so fragrant.

  2. I like your photo of the wood shavings. It looks like ribbons. I think it would be a lot of fun to make chopsticks. Your blog is very interesting :)

  3. Lovely chopsticks! I was forced to use a fork when I ate leftover sushi the other day – there was something just wrong about that, I missed the chopsticks. :) Great summer series, Cocomino!

  4. Those are really beautiful chopsticks (the cypresses) and I can imagine how good the smell is. I hope you each have a pair that you can use every day for the memories –
I also really like your teeshirt with the Micky silhouette!
