Ume-Producing Distric
“Ogose” 越生 town in Saitama prefercture is located in the western part of Saitama.
The town is a ume-producing district.
Ume is a Japanese apricot.
“Umeboshi” is the most popular way to eat them.

Of course, you can buy various kinds of Umeboshi in the town.
In addition, you can buy ume fruit for making Umeboshi by yourselves.
As for me, I bought these food made of ume.
The left is dried ume which is really salty.
The middle is Umeboshi, as you may have already known. It goes well with rice such as “Onigiri(rice ball).”
The right one is “youkan”(sweetened bean jelly). It’s very unique.
Generally, there is a special product in each area by which the town prospers.
So people living in the town are trying to make products in various ways for attracting lots of people from other areas.
For example, can you guess what this kind of food is?
It’s a candy which has been sold since many years ago. It’s made of only sugar, thick malt syrup and honey.
It’s also one of the special product in Ogose town.

Looks like a place I need to visit. I love a good umeboshi and umeshu
Japan Australia
Ah, I also like umeshu.
Thank you.
Very interesting, always something new to learn about at your blog. The photos are very good, too!
Many thanks for reading my blog continually. I’m really glad to hear that.
How interesting. I think it’s wonderful that local goods are being made and sold. It’s very good to hear.
I think so. It’s great to sell local thigs for people living there.
Ooh! That little candy looks delicious~~
Yes, the candy is very sweet.
Looks and sounds delicious!! I believe I’ve had that type of candy before… reminds me of one of my favorites of my childhood.
I forgot what they’re called!
I see. I guess that there are many kinds of candy since the old days.
Oh yes, the dried ume is very salty.
My children were surprised at the salty of the dried ume.
My husband and son love umeboshi.
That’s good. I guess that you also like it.
Never tied ume, or heard about it, but I would definitly try if I was there. Nice photos, Cocomino.
Thank you. I’m sure that you’ll like them if you try to eat them.
I’ve read that umeboshi is pretty healthy, but I never developed a taste for it. The first time I had one, it was in a bento and was very bright red. I was surprised because I thought there was a cherry in my rice for some reason, and I was expecting a sweet flavor.
Ah, it’s a 日の丸 bento. As you say, cherry is similar to umeboshi. It’s interesting if there is a cherry on rice.
Very interesting. That candy looks very sweet
Indeed. The candy was very very sweet.
Since apricots have always been a favorite fruit of mine, especially dried for snacking, I very much appreciate learning about these three Japanese food products made from the “ume”! Thank you for the fine photographs, as well.
Thank you so much. I’m really glad to hear that. Have a wonderful day:)
I had never heard of ‘Ume’ before (I learn the best things here)! But I think I would like them, because I enjoy apricots very much!
Thanks a lot. They were also first time for me. Interesting.
Great place! I love to eat umeboshi – my favorite way is in an onigiri – yummy!
Thanks. Onigiri is also our favorite. There are many kinds of ingredient such as tuna and konbu(a kind of kelp)
I think I have only had the one on the left and it is salty and sour? I can almost taste it by looking at the package.
Yes, it’s salty. The ume is very popular among us.
I don’t think I would ever eat umeboshi plain —
but it certainly gives interest and flavor to onigiri!
(And it looks so good, too.)
Yes, onigiri with umeboshi is a perfect food.
Have a great weekend.
It looks so tasty.
Of course, it’s tasty. Thanks.
