Eating Eel
My family and I went to an eel restaurant last weekend. There are some famous eel restaurants in Kawagoe, but this isn’t located in Kawagoe but in Sakado city, next to Kawagoe city. The culture of eating eel has existed for many years, although there are few eel restaurants in each area. For example a memorial service was held in the next room at the place where we stayed at that day. That is to say, the restaurant is still used for parties or events.
The price of eel is a bit expensive but the taste is really good and my children also like it. The taste is like fresh meat but it is healthy.

We also ate an eel bone fry, which tasted salty, for the first time. It’s unique and the taste is like potato chips.
This is a soup with liver of eel.
There is also a weatherfish dish, which is also rare in our neighborhood. Fortunately we found a good restaurant in the neighborhood.

Weatherfish? Is that dojō? Prime Minister Noda’s fish? I think I’d rather have eel!
Yes, it’s dojyo. Noda dojyo is funny but dojyo is also delicious than I expected.
I’ve always wanted to try this, and always wanted to go to the place in Asakusa but never did.
Perhaps You’ll eat dojyo except Asakusa.
Great post, it looks very nice…something we don’t have in the u.k.
Thanks a lot. I’m glad that you enjoyed this post.
fascinating that you have restaurants specialising in Eel. I’ve only ever eaten eel once and didn’t like it much but I think thats because of the way it was prepared. The first food picture looks very tempting to me!
That’s really delicious, I think. Thank you for your comment.
Is eating eels popular in Japan?
As I know, we export many eels to Japan, but I seldom eat them.
You guys really take advantage of eels, even bones.
Yes, it’s popular although there are few restaurants.
The bones of eel were first for me. It’s interesting.
Love eels too! But I have never tried eating the bones. Interesting.
I also like eels including the bones.
Mmm… I haven’t had eel since I’ve moved here, what’s wrong with me.
(I’ve had it many times before though)
Just eat it. I seldom eat it but I remembered the taste of it. Very delicious.
our friend, who now came back from Japan to Germany, told he saw one apple for 3 $, in Germany 1 apple is for 0.50 $ … – fruits expensive, fish not … comparing…
That’s right.Fruits and vegetables are expensive. So I want to grow many vegetables in my garden.
I fear in your garden no Ananas will grow; we had the same problem in East Germany behind the Iron Curtain. With irony they called their mangold (German: Runkelrüben) “Honecker’s Ananas” after the former president Honecker …
Thank you for sharing. I didn’t know Ananas. It sounds bad. I need to check my garden.
Very interesting post.
Thank you.
The photo of the unagi donburi makes my mouth water, it looks so delicious! I love unagi, so tender and flavorful. Although I think a few of the sushi places have been using something different lately. Some eel has been tougher and more rubbery than in the past, not what I have had before. Could be because of the expense, I don’t know.
I see. Thank you for sharing. At least that unagi I we ate was so delicious.
I hope that you’ll enjoy eating it.
Nice photo’s .. I had no iedea that eel was eaten. Of course, I suppose it is a cultural food.
I think I would try it. I like to experience new food items. Very nice post ….
Thanks much. The eel is a bit expensive but the taste is great. It’s soft and healthy. It doesn’t smell.
うな丼、あなご寿司、全部大好きですよ!!
ロンドンのうな丼はちょっと高いけど。。。><
あなご寿司やあなご丼もいいですね。ロンドンにもあるんですね。どんなものか興味深いです。 :)
Unagi is popular all over Japan. In Nagoya, we have a famous dish called hitsumabushi (grilled eel on rice).
Ah, yes.Hitsumabushi is popular in Nagoya. I ate it in Tokyo.
I’ve never try eel, but it looks like delicious. Anyway, I guess it depends on where you eat it, is very unlikely that I could find a good place to try it here in Madrid, don’t you think?
Have a nice weekend
I think so. You mainly get eels in eastern Asia including Japan. When you travel such places, you must be able to eat it. Have a great day, too.
I agree with your children – I love eel as well. I think the two times we went to visit Kawagoe, we had eel! Yum. Thanks for sharing and once again, making me hungry
Certainly there are famous unagi restaurants in Kawagoe. The restraunts are always crowded.
I’ve never eaten eel before, that I know of. I think I’ve eaten snake, though. I’ve had a lot of squid and cuddlefish, which is good, and I tried sea cucumber once. I have also had silkworm pupa. I didn’t know what they were, so I ate them. They were gross! Have you ever had silkworm pupa?
Wow, I have never eaten snake and silkworm and perhaps I’ll not eat them.
I’m scary with them. You are brave.
looks delicious. i enjoy eating eels too but have not tried the bone fry. if you’re dining in this restaurant again, do count me in.
Sure. I’ll invite you when I eat the bone of eels.
Hi Cocomino
.
Thank you for making me sooo hungry … again
That weatherfish dish looks interesting … what is its name?
Also Happy Girls Day to your daughters!
Hi Petru.
The name of weatherfish is dojyo(どじょう)
The name of weatherfish dish is yanagawanabe(やながわなべ、柳川鍋)
Happy girls day. I’ll share about that day, soon.
Every time I eat sushi and sashimi, I will always eat a piece or two of the eel sushi or eel with rice. Just delicious! Wonderful post…Have a great day my friend. Best wishes to your family.
Thank you. I have never eaten eel sushi. That must be delicious. I’ll try it.
Very interesting.
Thanks much.
Coco, I never thought I would drool over the idea of eating eels until I greedily scrolled through this post today! Thank you for your extremely unselfish sharing of your family life in Japan! So much have I learned!
My pleasure. I’m happy that you enjoyed this post. Have a great weekend.
absolutely fascinating but I don’t think I would eat it!
Lol. I guess that eels are really better than you expect.
Unagi has and will always be my most favored Japanese dish… I simply love unaggeeee…
Me, too. It’s our favorite food and culture.
Sorry – I’m vegetarian and don’t eat eel!
It’s okay. It depends on what you like.
I don’t eat fish or meat but in London, England, jellied eels are popular, especially in what is known as the ‘East End of London’.
Jellied eels sound interesting. I would like to try it.
I like the sweet sauce of the eel!
So delicious!
As you say, the sauce is a bit sweet. Yummy.
It’s always so nice to find a restaurant you enjoy, isn’t it? Kind of exciting! I don’t think I’ve ever tried eel before, but I have to say, it really does look pretty good!
Many thanks. Yes, it’s exciting to find a new restaurant. We really enjoyed it.
I love eel and in Poland we mainly eat it smoked. Unfortunately it’s very expensive but sooooooo tasty! *^v^*
Smoked eel sounds interesting. Yummy.
You make it look so attractive. Kudos!
Thanks a lot. They are really delicious.

Just found your blog and it’s fantastic! I visited Kawagoe last October, and also took part of the Kawagoe Matsuri: it has been wonderful. I had an eel dish with rice and sweet potatoes, could you tell me its name? I am also looking for the recipe
Best wishes from Italy!
Thank you for stopping by from Italy.
We call eel with rice as Unazyu うな重 or Unadon うな丼.
We call Satsumaimo さつまいも as sweet potato. It’s a famous food in Kawagoe. I would like to visit Italy.
Thank you for the information! Actually tonight I made a wannabe うな重 based on what I could remember of that dish. It wasn’t like the one I had in a beautiful restaurant in Kawagoe, but was good anyway. Hope to visit Japan again soon!!
That’s great.
I’m really happy to hear that.
