Eating Eel

IMG_0622

My family and I went to an eel restaurant last weekend. There are some famous eel restaurants in Kawagoe, but this isn’t located in Kawagoe but in Sakado city, next to Kawagoe city. The culture of eating eel has existed for many years, although there are few eel restaurants in each area. For example a memorial service was held in the next room at the place where we stayed at that day. That is to say, the restaurant is still used for parties or events.

The price of eel is a bit expensive but the taste is really good and my children also like it. The taste is like fresh meat but it is healthy.

We also ate an eel bone fry, which tasted salty, for the first time. It’s unique and the taste is like potato chips.

This is a soup with liver of eel.

There is also a weatherfish dish, which is also rare in our neighborhood. Fortunately we found a good restaurant in the neighborhood.

  1. fascinating that you have restaurants specialising in Eel. I’ve only ever eaten eel once and didn’t like it much but I think thats because of the way it was prepared. The first food picture looks very tempting to me!

      • I fear in your garden no Ananas will grow; we had the same problem in East Germany behind the Iron Curtain. With irony they called their mangold (German: Runkelrüben) “Honecker’s Ananas” after the former president Honecker …

  2. The photo of the unagi donburi makes my mouth water, it looks so delicious! I love unagi, so tender and flavorful. Although I think a few of the sushi places have been using something different lately. Some eel has been tougher and more rubbery than in the past, not what I have had before. Could be because of the expense, I don’t know.

  3. I’ve never try eel, but it looks like delicious. Anyway, I guess it depends on where you eat it, is very unlikely that I could find a good place to try it here in Madrid, don’t you think?
    Have a nice weekend :)

  4. I agree with your children – I love eel as well. I think the two times we went to visit Kawagoe, we had eel! Yum. Thanks for sharing and once again, making me hungry :-)

  5. I’ve never eaten eel before, that I know of. I think I’ve eaten snake, though. I’ve had a lot of squid and cuddlefish, which is good, and I tried sea cucumber once. I have also had silkworm pupa. I didn’t know what they were, so I ate them. They were gross! Have you ever had silkworm pupa?

  6. Hi Cocomino
Thank you for making me sooo hungry … again :P .
That weatherfish dish looks interesting … what is its name?
Also Happy Girls Day to your daughters! ;)

    • Hi Petru.
The name of weatherfish is dojyo(どじょう)
The name of weatherfish dish is yanagawanabe(やながわなべ、柳川鍋)
Happy girls day. I’ll share about that day, soon.

  7. Every time I eat sushi and sashimi, I will always eat a piece or two of the eel sushi or eel with rice. Just delicious! Wonderful post…Have a great day my friend. Best wishes to your family.

  8. Coco, I never thought I would drool over the idea of eating eels until I greedily scrolled through this post today! Thank you for your extremely unselfish sharing of your family life in Japan! So much have I learned!

  9. It’s always so nice to find a restaurant you enjoy, isn’t it? Kind of exciting! I don’t think I’ve ever tried eel before, but I have to say, it really does look pretty good! :)

  11. Just found your blog and it’s fantastic! I visited Kawagoe last October, and also took part of the Kawagoe Matsuri: it has been wonderful. I had an eel dish with rice and sweet potatoes, could you tell me its name? I am also looking for the recipe :)
    Best wishes from Italy!

    • Thank you for stopping by from Italy.
We call eel with rice as Unazyu うな重 or Unadon うな丼.
We call Satsumaimo さつまいも as sweet potato. It’s a famous food in Kawagoe. I would like to visit Italy. :)

      • Thank you for the information! Actually tonight I made a wannabe うな重 based on what I could remember of that dish. It wasn’t like the one I had in a beautiful restaurant in Kawagoe, but was good anyway. Hope to visit Japan again soon!!
