Buying Used Books

Recently I haven’t buy new books because I can buy books in some other ways or borrow books at a library. I guess that most people, including me, buy used books at amazon. com or other Internet sites. However it’s also fun to visit used book stores in my neighborhood.

For example “Book Off” is one of the largest used bookstore chains in Japan. You can buy many books and manga for 100 yen. Some people buy used books at shops and sell them at amazon.com, yahoo auction and ebay.

Anyway I bought “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ( in Japanese) ” written by Roald Dahl at Book Off for my oldest daughter last month. That’s why I read the book for the purpose of learning English but I enjoyed the story also..

I wasn’t sure if she would be able to read this book because there are many small letters in it.However, she finished reading it in a few days and she said that it was very exciting and fun. It was a very good start to reading books.

If you know any good books for my children, who are eight and four years old, please let me know. Perhaps most of those books have been translated into Japanese.

  1. You’re a great dad! :)

I’m another Enid Blyton fan. How about Winnie-the-Pooh? (Wow, that would be a challenging translation!)

I like to read children’s books in Japanese because I can understand them. Adult books are too difficult for me. My favourite is ごんぎつね, but it’s very sad!

  2. Buying used books is such a good idea. I bought a few books from some charity shops a couple of days ago :-)

Roald Dahl books are a good choice; my children used to love reading those. The Black Beauty series is worth a look. Written by Anna Sewell, the books centre around the world of horses. I’ll have a think and will be back with a couple more suggestions.

  3. I love books… I love to read books… and I love old books, too. This is so beautiful to share with us dear Cocomino, I loved it. Amazon is good for me too. Thank you, with my love, nia

  4. Wonderful! 100 yen is a fantastic price. I could spend hours in Kinokuniya looking at books. I came home from Japan with a few children’s books written in Japanese because I thought it would be a good and more enjoyable way to learn. It must look odd for an adult to be reading children’s books, but oh well. As for the books I liked when I was a kid many years ago, I read every Nancy Drew book I could get my hands on. Those were my favorite.

    • Thanks. I used to visit Kinokuniya when I was a student. There are many interesting books. As you say, it’s also fun to read children’s books for adults.
I didn’t know Nancy Drew but I found that the books in Japanese. Thanks again.
